Dr. Rajiv Lochan

Brief Profile:

A highly trained Hepato Pancreato Biliary (HPB) and Multi-Organ Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Rajiv Lochan is an expert in liver, kidney and pancreas transplant, complex liver, pancreatic and biliary (gall bladder and bile duct) surgeries and surgical resections of complex retroperitoneal sarcomas. Trained in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and India, his fields of special interest include surgery for hilar tumours, HPB resection without the use of blood/blood products, improving the outcomes hepatocellular carcinoma treatment and making living donor hepatectomy safer.

His clinical interests are in the areas of liver transplantation – both adult and paediatric, management of pancreatic cancer, multi-disciplinary therapy of hepato-cellular cancer, and surgery of retroperitoneal sarcomas, acute and chronic pancreatitis. His specific areas of research interest are pancreas cancer (risk factors, early diagnosis and management), multi- modality treatment of HCC, and modulation of liver reperfusion injury following its transplantation and increasing donor safety in Living Donor Living Transplant.

He has been working as a Consultant HPB and Abdominal Transplant Surgeon in India since 2013. Along with his colleagues, he has founded a multi-disciplinary Integrated Liver Care Group. He also runs a not-for profit organisation – ILC Foundation which focusses on increasing awareness of Liver diseases, works towards preventing them, carries out related educational activities and is trying to make Liver related care more affordable. He is closely associated with many start-ups which are seeking to leverage the current digital technologies to maximise the societal reach of developments in Healthcare.

His vision for the future of HPB Surgery and especially of Liver Transplantation is to ensure that the benefits of the advances in the Specialty benefit all. Towards this end, he has developed an Affordable Liver transplant model for children and developing and growing this further is of key value for him and his team.

Dr. Lochan is UK Board certified Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary surgeon with a special interest in complex Liver surgery and all forms of liver transplantation surgery. This was achieved after formal training as a National Training numbered trainee in UK after a research MD. He is also a European Society of Transplantation certified transplant surgeon and the recipient of the Pancreas Diploma from the UEGW (Europe) and the European Society of Organ Transplantation diploma.

He has been Senior Fellow - Institute of Transplantation, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK August 2011 to January 2013, HPB Surgery and Multi-visceral Transplantation with focus on Liver Transplantation; He has also been Senior Fellow - Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong University February 2013 to August 2013, Liver Transplantation with focus on Living Donor Liver Transplantation.

An FRCS (Intercollegiate, Subspecialty HPB & Transplantation Surgery), from RCS Edinburgh, Dr. Lochan has wide educational experience.
